꧁꧂ Meaning

If you’ve played Free Fire, PUBG Mobile or Mobile Legends, you’ve seen it a thousand times: a name wrapped in those curled wings. ꧁ on the left, ꧂ on the right. Everyone uses them. Almost nobody knows what they are.

they’re punctuation marks from the Javanese script, an Indonesian writing system. Their official names are Javanese Left Rerenggan (꧁) and Javanese Right Rerenggan (꧂), and rerenggan is the Javanese word for ornament. So they mean, quite literally, “decoration.”

Which makes them the rare internet symbol that’s being used almost exactly as intended.

Where they actually come from

Javanese script — known natively as Aksara Jawa, Hanacaraka or Carakan — developed on the island of Java and was in active everyday use from around the mid-16th century until the mid-20th, when the Latin alphabet gradually took over. It’s still taught today in Yogyakarta, Central Java and East Java, though it has limited use in daily life.

It’s an abugida, like Devanagari: each letter carries a built-in vowel that diacritics can change. And traditionally it’s written scriptio continua — no spaces between words at all. With nothing to break up the flow, the script leans on a set of decorative punctuation marks to organise the page and frame sections of text.

꧁ and ꧂ are two of those marks: a matched left-and-right ornamental pair, used to enclose and decorate. Centuries later, that is precisely the job they do around a Free Fire name.

How they reached your game lobby

The path is less romantic than the origin.

Javanese script was added to Unicode in version 5.2, released in 2009, in the block U+A980–U+A9DF. That single decision put ꧁ and ꧂ into the same universal character list as every emoji and every letter on your keyboard. From there they shipped inside the font packages on Android and iOS, which meant billions of phones could suddenly draw them.

Then mobile gaming exploded across Southeast Asia and India — Free Fire, PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends — and every one of those games had a short nickname field that accepted Unicode. Name-generator sites picked up the symbol, players copied each other, and a Javanese manuscript ornament became the default way to say “this is my gaming name.”

Nobody started it. It spread the way internet things spread: someone used it, it looked good, and a million people copied it.

Does ꧁꧂ mean anything in a name?

No — and that’s worth saying plainly, because there’s a lot of nonsense online claiming otherwise.

It doesn’t mean king, royalty, pro player, clan leader or anything else. It carries no rank, no status and no hidden message. It’s an ornamental bracket. Any meaning it has now is meaning gamers gave it: it reads as “gaming name” because so many gaming names use it.

The other symbols in the same stack — and what they really are

Most players paste ꧁꧂ alongside three or four other marks without ever checking what they are. Here’s the honest list.

SymbolUnicode nameWhat it actually is
꧁ ꧂Javanese Left/Right RerengganJavanese ornamental punctuation
Tibetan Mark Rgya Gram ShadA Tibetan punctuation mark
Tibetan Symbol Rdo Rje Rgya GramA Tibetan Buddhist vajra-cross symbol
Adi ShaktiThe Khanda — the emblem of Sikhism
Balinese Adeg AdegA Balinese script sign
Katakana Letter TuA Japanese syllable, read “tsu”
彡 乂 亗CJK ideographsChinese characters
༺ ༻Tibetan Mark Gug Rtags Gyon/GyasTibetan bracket marks

One of those deserves a pause.

☬ is a religious symbol. Unicode calls it Adi Shakti, but it is the Khanda, the emblem of Sikhi — a double-edged sword encircled by the chakkar and flanked by two kirpans, representing the Sikh doctrine of Deg Tegh Fateh. It appears on the Nishan Sahib flag flown at gurdwaras worldwide. It has been in Unicode since version 1.1 in 1993, long before anyone put it in a gaming name.

Nobody’s telling you what to do with your nickname. But it’s worth knowing that the symbol you’re using as a spike between two letters is sacred to millions of people, many of whom are in the same lobby as you. ࿇ and ༒ carry religious weight in Tibetan Buddhist contexts too. If you’d rather decorate with something that has no faith attached, ★ ♛ ✦ ⚡ ☾ and 彡 do the same visual job.

Using them in a name

They cost one character each. A ꧁꧂ pair uses two of your budget — which matters in Free Fire, where the name field is short. Unlike the bold and script alphabets, these don’t double-count. ꧁ᴋɪɴɢ꧂ is exactly 6 characters.

Order matters. ꧁ opens, ꧂ closes. Reversing them looks wrong to anyone who’s seen the pattern before.

Empty boxes mean a missing font, not broken text. If ꧁ shows as □ on an older Android, that device just has no glyph for the Javanese block. The character arrived intact — the phone can’t draw it. Nothing you retype will fix it on that device.

They work almost everywhere. Instagram, WhatsApp, Discord, TikTok, most game name fields. Not in Instagram’s @username, which accepts only letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

Common questions

How do I type ꧁ on a keyboard?

You don’t, realistically. There’s no key for it and no phone keyboard offers it by default — it belongs to a script most keyboards don’t ship. Copying is the normal way, for everyone.

Is ꧁꧂ Chinese or Japanese?

Neither. It’s Javanese, from Indonesia. The Chinese-looking marks people pair it with — 彡 乂 亗 — are genuinely CJK ideographs, which is probably where the confusion starts.

Can using it get me banned?

No. It’s standard Unicode punctuation, like a comma. Games ban names for offensive content, not for decorative characters.

Why does it look different on my friend’s phone?

Every device draws it with whatever font it has. Same character, different drawing — a Samsung, an iPhone and a budget Android will each render it slightly differently.

Does it mean royalty or king?

No. That’s an internet myth. It means ornament, and that’s all it has ever meant.
